Dear Carolyn and the Schilte family
My brother Frank was a true blessing in my life, no one could ask for a better brother. I still hear his voice in my head, hope that never fades away. I binge on photo albums finding joy and laughter there. We were children together in Holland, and like me, he loved the Zoo, Blijdorp, in Rotterdam. He loved animals all his life. His love of skating must stem from his Dutch heritage. We had marvelous adventures on the boat that brought us to Canada in 1957. He was quite slender when starting highschool, and told me that on day one, in the Gym he started lifting and curling the heavy weights in front of everyone, then said he was never troubled by bullies. He bought a bench press with his pocket money from delivering for the Drugstore from about age 11. By his teens he was an avid hockey player with dreams of the NHL. When I had left home at 18 he came to get me one time, to ride on the back of his motorcycle to the arena. He settled me behind the players bench and said with total confidence I will do a hat trick for you. When he had done the third goal he took a little bow in front of me, you never forget something like that. As we matured and drifted apart geographically we did visit each other as often as we could. I was with Carolyn and Frank in Pictou just after Frankie was born, all of us thrilled with this beautiful baby boy. I stayed with them a while later, in Dartmouth and watched 9 month old Denise take her first steps at Peggy's Cove. She was just an adorable baby. I rode back to Ontario with the family, camping along the way, he and I battling the wind to take a tent down in a sudden storm in the night time The trip was hilarious because there were maybe 3 tapes we played over and over, Beatle music, and the children throwing up added to the merry mayhem. In our adult lives we met up occasionally, staying with them on Charlton Ave in Hamilton where the upright pool in the back yard was the main attraction, Frankie daring to jump off the roof into the pool, awesome, and Frank let him do it.. When Frank and family moved to Florida I stayed with them several times, twice at House by the Sea, once at the Nomad, and he let me paint murals on his hotels. That was heaven for me. WE grew even closer working side by side, always music on the tape deck, mostly oldies we would sing along to .These were some of the best times of my life. They rescued me when I flew in from Jamaica one time, with a broken arm , broken spirit, broken heart. Restored me with love and kindness and lots of laughter. Twice he and Carolyn came to visit Tom and I here in Sooke B.C. we had wonderful times touring and hiking. I missed them terribly when they left. At Christmas we always exchanged packages full of surprises and I will miss that. I will miss everything about him, he was such a huge part of my life. He was a true sportsman, switched to golf when he could no longer lace up the skates. He was a great storyteller, a loyal friend and a completely devoted father. His children were his pride and joy. Frankie, Denise and Jeanne, I know how sorrowful this is for you. there was just nobody quite like him. Rest in peace my darling brother, now I can believe in heaven so we can meet up again. My love for you is deep as the ocean, forever and always.

To the Brown and Schilte family,
I just heard the news. I loved your father Frank. He reminded me of my Dad in many ways. I always enjoyed our conversations about life, raising kids, sports and especially the Blackhawks. I loved his stories and how competitive and fiery he was. He loved to coach and mentor kids and his teams won a lot:) He was so proud of Denise, Chris and the grandkids.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Please know that we’re praying for you and your family during this difficult time of transition. May Frank rest in peace and may your warm memories stay strong in your heart!
I’ll see you at his service on Friday.
Love,
The Dunnam’s
