I was friends with Michael many years ago when we lived on the same block in Wantagh, NY. The thing I recall most about him was his kindness and his laugh. A good-hearted soul. Good tidings, my friend.

Michael: My Gift From Heaven Michael: The name you asked me to call you on a most perfect fall afternoon in September, 27 years ago. As I took a walk at Jones Beach there was this slight breeze that touched my cheek which turned my head towards you. When I saw you, I loved you from that moment. We were destined to be together. Our love for nature would continue to bring us closer. We both loved the outdoors, so we chose to spend most of our time hiking and taking walks. You took me to so many beautiful trails and parks in the USA and in Europe. You showed me and taught me so many things that I would never have seen or learned about. When I’m angry or jealous or sad that we didn’t have more together time; I remember my prayer of 27 years ago that asked God to bring an incredible man into my life. I wanted to be married and have children. I was given that dream. We were married for 24 years and we raised two wonderful children. I know being a husband and father meant everything to you. When you got sick you fought the disease with such strength and dignity. You made 6 important goals three of which had to do with our family. You were able to travel to see Brian graduate from Clemson University, you went to see Laura graduate from Land O Lakes IB program. Both of our children became these incredible young adults. As time goes on I will watch them honor your name as they remember all the wonderful things that they have learned from their daddy. The last goal that you made was that we would make our 24th wedding anniversary and that’s when you took your last walk with me. We walked at Lettuce Lake Park and enjoyed the weather, animals, planes that flew above and our love for each other. You gave me that alone time which I will always treasure. Michael, even in death family was most important. You waited till we were all together talking quietly at your bedside, then you peacefully went to the Lord. Michael we will always remember and appreciate the most wonderful man in our lives, the man who was so calm, patient, loving and incredibly smart. You were a blessing in my life. Thank you. I will always LOVE and miss you. Nancy

My Dad was a close friend of mine. We did many things together. Out of the many things I picked up from my Dad throughout my childhood such as playing with model trains, painting, running, and hiking; many ask: what about music? Music was a great passion of my Dad’s, but as I grew older we usually did not listen to it in the car, instead we would talk, I would typically ask questions and through this I learned about my Dad’s many travels, history, art, politics, and much more. I am saddened that I could not learn more from my Dad, but I am blessed of all I did learn through our many conversations. I miss you Dad.

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it … “DAD!” –Author Unknown I miss and love you Daddy!

I have had the honor to befriend Brian, and through him have had the opportunity to learn and meet his father. Brian would tell us in Clemson about how he learned to love running from an early age because of his dad, running 5ks together with Brian was quite young! From what I can tell, Mr. Machmer shared much of his love of art, music, enjoying nature, and traveling with his family. Michael Machmer meant so much to his family, and I can see him living on through his beautiful family. It is comforting to know that he is at peace after showing his strength and love with all of us. He is another example of how to Love to all of us. God bless Mrs. Machmer, Brian, Laura, and his family and friends.

I met Michael more than 41 years ago at Drew University and we became close friends. We spent hours together talking about music, learning to play guitar, spinning records (!) on WERD AM (!) radio, playing basketball and tennis and generally navigating our way through the confusion of the early 1970's. We spent time at each other's homes and Michael soon became a favorite of my parents. Michael developed great talents as an artist as well as a musician. He hand-designed his Christmas cards. He made a wooden box with a stained glass top for my mother. Michael visited me in Minnesota a few times, once in the dead of winter. (Few people have the nerve to do that!) We enjoyed music (the long-disbanded Radio Rangers with two fiddle players) and (during a summer visit) the Minnesota State Fair (featuring all the milk you could drink for 25 cents). We reconnected over the past two years during Michael's illness and I had the pleasure of visiting him in Lutz in August of 2010. I got to know his wife Nancy and daughter Laura and heard many good things about son Brian. Michael was in fairly good health then and showed me many of the places he liked to walk and visit. (And he could walk for miles!) It was a wonderful trip, full of memories that I cherish. I greatly admired Michael's clear values and uncomplicated, generous and happy approach to life. In so many ways, he was my hero, my slightly older "brother" who lived what he believed. I miss him very much.

So deeply sorry for your loss of such a wonderful partner, father and supporter of family. Michael was one of those very special people who cared so much and worked so hard to provide for those he cared for. I will always remember him as a solid supporter of education and the arts as well. I know you will miss him more than we know but believe that he will still be there with you with his loving spirit and memories.

Our hearts go out to your family at this time of deep loss and sorrow. We remember fondly the times we were Blessed to meet your family when we both visited our son at Clemson. I always remember Michael being so welcoming and so helpful to others, one time I was alone bringing Rahul back and Michael was so kind and helpful in putting the loft bed, in the dorm, together with us. You all welcomed our son into your home when he visited Florida, even during your illness. Your way of your life always living and giving to other is such a Blessing and example to us all. Mike and I sat next to each other at Sparton and shared family stories, world events and music trivia. After Mike's illness, I kept very close to Mike and his family with visits and I'll remember our outings with Mike, Nancy, Pat, Vince and Ron. Those lunches are so so precious memories. I keep the photo of us all on my frig and will still look at it each day with a smile. I will continue to support the family with my little transportation trips for Brian to the airport, visit Nancy and make sure they remain in my daily life because they have become family. Miss you Mikey but I know you're in a good place now.

I was so saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We met a long time ago when I taught pre-k with his wife Nancy. I remember when they first started dating. I was able to share in many happy events in their life. Their wedding and the birth of delightful Brian are several occasions I hold dear. I even captured some of those moments on film, making photo albums to capture treasured moments in time. I was fortunate to have had a visit from Nancy, Mike and Laura several years ago. We spent a lovely day speaking of the good ole days. We shared some laughs and smiles. I also had the opportunity to meet the lovely Laura. Nancy and Mike created a lovely life together, raising two terrific children. I had a brief conversation last week with Brian. He called to announce that his dad had passed. He spoke with such courage and closed by saying, " My father wasn't just a dad to me, but rather, a close friend. We shared so many interests including running." I feel so priviledged to have known Mike and of course Nancy. I know that the love they shared will surely sustain the family through these tough times. Much love from Sharon, Gladys and Lewis Singer
