Van and Kent My mother Helen Bailey Lyon and your Grandmother Safriet were first cousins. Your Dad spent a lot of weekends with us in Rural Retreat while attending V TECH. He and my mother kept in contact over the years until her passing in 1988. We enjoyed his visits over the years. I am so sorry for your loss and hope the good memories help ease the loss. My Love Becky

To Kent and Van Safriet and to Lewis and Dallas and Mary Kent and Van, I was a childhood friend of your father, having played little league, pony league, county league and high school baseball with him. Also, as I am sure you know, he was the center on our undefeated 1959 high school football team of which we all were very proud. I was the quarterback on that team and at our last high school reunion "Bruzz," (as we called him) kidded with my wife that I had felt of his butt more than I had with hers. While I know he was very sick at our last reunion I thought he looked good and we had a very nice visit reflecting on our wonderful times growing up in Gate City and Hilton. During the summers I would ride my bicycle up the river road and play baseball or basketball in the field beside the Safriet home. Also, I thought you might like to know that he recently told me how proud he was of both of you. I had seen an article about two months ago in the Ricmond Times Dispatch about an eminent domain case from Florida argued before the U.S Supreme Court by Kent Safriet. It caught my eye because I am a judge in Virginia and Bruzz had previously told me that he had a son who was a prominent lawyer in Florida. I thought that the case must have been argued by his son. Bruzz confirmed my email that Kent argued the case and he told me how proud he was of you. At the same time he told me that Van was a pilot in South Carolina in law enforcement and that he was very proud of both sons. Growing up I knew Lewis and Dallas and Mary and have kept up with them thru my brother, Tucker, who is a lawyer in Gate City. To each of you I send my sympathy in Lester's death. Sam ("Sammy") Coleman

I met Les at my Self Help Store office DPW. Les was the new Chief of Building & Grounds DPW, Schweinfurt, Germany 1998. For the next seven years with Les, I was probably his best friend, so I can relate to alot of things that happen in his lifestyle. My wife Ingrid invited him to a Greek Gasthaus. And it led on from there. Got Les into a German & American Volksmarch Club (walking club). This was Les's new sport, we walked all kinds of weather. At this time I met his two sons, Kent & Van on a volksmarch. Les had this old clunker car drove around for a couple of years until it just stopped dead. And Les says Elver I need you take me shopping for a new Mercedes and we drive all over the place. And I told Les what's wrong with the Mercedes dealership across the street from where you work. No answer. Then at some time Les states that his old girl friend is comming to Germany on vacation. And this is when we meet Roberta, (and we are still friend's) But at Les's work place, Les was a very demanding person, it was his way or not at all. Les would get loud and stressed out at work. But the work got done. Then it was 2004 Les was having a lung removed. This was very hard for Les. And again his son's were back with Les for the operation here in Germany. In 2004 was getting ready to retire, this was greatest retirement party I have been to. I have never seen Les cry until that night on his party. When his two son's and Roberta flew from the United States and arrived at the party. He was so full of JOY. This was a PRICELESS MOMENT! Les will be Greatly Missed. REST IN PEACE

It is hard to believe that Les is no longer here since he looked so good at the High School Reunion. He blessed my life and I am so glad for the opportunity of seeing him again at the reunion. How quickly things can change. None of us know when our time will come, but when it does, may we all be prepared to meet Jesus. May the Lord bless and keep his family in perfect peace.

Lester was a special person. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and classmates from high school. J.D. always talked about the many baseball games they played together with him pitching and Lester catching. They played on the same teams from Little League through high school. Now they can talk about them again as they are together in Heaven.
