John Dobbs - an awesome man, co-worker and friend. He was the best of the best in his field of expertise but also with his friends who knew him at Lockheed Martin. I worked with John on the F-22 program in Marietta. He was the Mastermind of the avionics department - a brilliant man. But John was a rare breed for an engineer - he was not only brilliant but a kind, talented, light-hearted, and funny man who loved Andrea Bocelli, which he played (and sang!) as he drove our F-22 gang to many Blue Moon Pizza lunches. I cherished his friendship, insight and sweet spirit. He was a special man who made a very positive and critical impact on my life for which I will always remember and be grateful.

Condolences to the family of John Dobbs. Thoughts and prayers with your family and loved ones.
This news leaves me so sad.
I shared the office with Dobber, many lunches and good stories. Travelled many places with him on business, teaching and training and planning the next thing for F-22 capabilities and cockpit design. Dobber was brilliant.
I think about how he was fond of the quotation (William Shakespeare?) “Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.”
Indeed, he has. Can't think of a person more appropriate than Dobber to which this saying applies.
It also strikes me as more than coincidence that his flight from this earth, slipping the surly bonds, occurred the same day as the first flight of F-22 in 1997, 24 years ago.
His winsome smile here really does capture the man's magnetism. He had his ways of tweaking you with a little wise crack saying, just for the reaction it might provoke - in a funny way - capturing you with a charming yet dubious grin.
I miss this guy - his wit and brilliance lives on in the product he created. It should be of the utmost consolation to his survivors and posterity that the foremost fighter jet in all the world bears his brilliant mind in the situational awareness picture it presents to those men and women who are out there fighting our battles keeping this country safe. We see them here often, stepping into the cockpit to train - and they are the best in all the world - they have a remarkable experience interacting with the controls and displays that Dobber designed and documented for these world class operators.
Dobber would say - its all about time on target. If you are not early you are late.
Who knows the days of our life? Our Creator does, and it's in His Faithful Hands.
Dobber's time of target was perfect and well planned. He made the best of every day.
He has slipped the surly bonds and left us all in good hands.
God Bless you all as your remember our good friend and your most stellar family member.

My brother and I have lots of great memories of Johnny Bob when we lived within two blocks of them in Tulsa back in the day. When we picked teams almost every evening for football you always wanted JB on your team. He was so quick and fast you just gave him or through him the ball and got out of his way. In 1968 JB was playing ball for the Academy and I was at Tulsa. We played them at the Academy and it was quite a trip to be on the field with JB again. Late in the game I completed a pass in front of the Air Force bench, got promptly knocked to the ground and as I was getting up I looked over at their sideline and saw JB smiling and giving me a thumbs up. I have to tell the truth......Air Force smoked us 20 - 8. JB will be missed but we will always remember all the great times the we had together.

John and I became best friends at the Air Force Academy in 1967 when we were in the same squadron during basic training at Jacks Valley and during the rest of “doolie” year. We were two of 21 quarterbacks recruited for the freshman football team and we spent a lot of time together as doolies and during sophomore year practicing football and learning how to be cadets. John had quick moves and I remember one day when he left me in the dust with a scar over my right eye from his cleat when I tried to tackle him. I still have the scar.
After graduation I visited John in El Paso after riding my motorcycle from Maryland and spent 3 days with John and his family while I recuperated. John took me to the stadium at UTEP and told me all about his dad, Coach Bobby Dobbs. After pilot training I stopped at John’s place again for a couple of days, this time in an old milk truck, with my motorcycle inside, that I was driving to Luke AFB for F-4 training. I broke down about 60 miles out of town and John came to the rescue. We roomed together in an apartment in Glendale, Az while learning how to drop bombs and employ our first fighter, the F-4 Phantom. Learning how to fly the F-4 was great fun and we stayed in shape playing flag football and other sports. One day John loaned me his pride and joy, his 1970 Corvette 454 and I promptly ran it across a concrete lane divider that I couldn’t see over the big hood scoop and scrapped it a little, but I don’t think John ever forgave me for that and I don’t blame him.
After our F-4 training John went to MacDill AFB and I zoomed off to England. During one trip to Tampa I visited John and met Jane and ran up and down the steps of a stadium with Mike at a football game, which I doubt that he remembers. After the F-4 we both spent a lot of time flying F-16s, which we both loved, but we never flew together again.
Lots of good memories with Dobber, and all of us that served with John remember him for his friendship, his wit, his leadership and his love for his family, but most of all for his love of flying. We will all miss him.
