To Col. Basta's Family: There is deep sorrow amoung us that worked with Col. Basta over the years. Jim was key to the Air Force, and key in many of my sucsess stories. I was a Division Chief at Hanscom AFB, Ma. that was charged with acquisition responsibilities for Air Force for new Electronics Systems procured through the US Army, (Ft. Monmouth, NJ; Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa; and MacDill AFB, Fl). There is many existing rules and regulation (many of which need updating that seem to take forever). In many cases Col. Basta had a complete understanding of the Army System. He also had deep respect and feelings for personnel at the various installations. This enabled him to negotiate through pit falls of certain regulations and permitted the group to move forward, as we should, to provide the capabilities needed by our troops as quickly as possible. Col. Basta was the one and only to call when assistance was needed from the Army. Adding to this is the fact that he was the ranking Military person on many projects but he never, nver pulled rank or lost his cool . . . . . a tribute many do not have. Again, I and many that crossed Col. Basta's path, are proud to be part of this team. We can't possibability miss him more than his family does but you all should know that he always looked out for us almost like a father. Thanks to the family for loaning him to us. To Col. Basta's family. I wish to say that Col. Basta, inaddition to being an outstanding and faithful officer in the Air Force, he was also a wonder to work with. I worked as a Civil Servant Division Chief, at Hanscom AFB, Ma. and was responsible for the acquisition of Electronic Systems procured thru the Army (Ft. Monmouth, N.J ; Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa; as well as MacDill AFB, Fl.) Col. Basta had complete knowledge of the procedures required at the various installation. On several occasions he had to bend the rules in order to speed the process of needed systems in the field, (Air Force and Army Wlkrld-wide), fieldso our troups worked tireless to

Marie, Our deepest condolences on the loss of your great guy. You know that I hold you and Jim responsible for getting me to marry Irma (43 years and counting) thanks!! I will always remember Jim piling into the tiny back seat of my Karman Ghia for our daily commute to Lakehurst NAS, back in the old days. Being height challenged has its advantages.

The first time I met Jim was about 10 years ago at Veterans Park. His spirit and dedication for our veterans and his love for teaching students alll about his experiences as a helicopter pilot and serving in Vietnam simply amazed me. Jim kept a busy schedule but was kind enough to take on (2) more elementary schools where he brought his helicopter and educated many of today's youth. Jim will be in our hearts forever and our sympathy goes out to his beloved family. What a legacy follows Jim.

When I received my first assignment as a supervisor at the Tobyhanna Army Depot, then-Major Basta and Bill Morris played significant roles in guiding my life and influencing my career. Those two were like peas-in-a-pod and set the gold standard for professionalism and respect between military and civilian coworkers. Our prayers and our hearts go out to Marie and to all of Jim's beautiful family.

Jim was a true friend. We trained together in the 7th Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry "Ruthless Riders" at Fort Knox in 1967 and flew and fought together in Viet Nam. I have not been able to get to as many Ruthless Riders reunions as Jim but whenever I went, he always had something to give me. I have tee shirts, caps and a special black canvas bag with handles and the red letters "TRW" on the side. It was made for a small laptop computer, but it is just the right size to hold my favorite Bible and my Halley's Bible Handbook. Every time I pick up my Bible I think of Jim and his generosity. Bless you Marie and all the kids. Jim's brothers at the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association of Florida (VHPAF) have lost our leader and we miss him so much already. But you've lost your best friend. The best friend a wife, a son, a daughter or a grandchild could ever have. The Lord let us be with this remarkable guy for a long time. But yesterday He told Jim "Welcome Home" and "Well done, good and faithful servant".

Our love and condolences... Uncle Jimmy will be missed. Seems like yesterday Uncle Jimmy took me to Disney World and went swimming with me in the 'backyard'. I will always be grateful for how he loved my Gram Gram and Aunt Mary and cared for my dad, especially last year as we had to say good bye to him as well. It's been a sad and tough year, but I am grateful Dad and Jimmy are in heaven rejoicing, and maybe even catching a little grief from Aunt Mary and Aunt Rose :) Love to Marie and the all the kids. - Tina

Marie and family, I've had the honor to know Jimmy for most of my adult life. From the time I married into the extended Gallia family in 1972, yes, for 40 years. He scared the hell out of me whenI was a young newcomer to the clan. So intense and so full of life. I got to know him and I think finally earned a little respect. It was an honor to know him. My thoughts are with you as you deal with your loss.
