Obituary of Ruth Kearney Johnson Mammah

MAMMAH, Ruth Kearney (Johnson), 78, of Wesley Chapel, Florida, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011. She was born November 8, 1932 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Ruth was a graduate of Methodist Girls High School and earned a teaching degree from Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone. She immigrated to the United States in 1985. Mrs. Mammah was a retired elementary school teacher who served as a mentor, educator, an advocate for peace, and reached out to the less fortunate in society. Ruth was very active with St. Thomas Church in Hastings, Sierra Leone, where she was an enrolling member of the Mothers Union along with many other organizations within the church. Other church memberships include, Mt. Hope Church in Lansing, Michigan and St. Catherine of Alexandria Episcopal Church in Temple Terrace, Florida. Ruth’s family includes her husband, Lawrence Abioseh Mammah; two sons, Lawrence Jr., and Albert, and his wife, Claudia; daughter, Lydia Mammah; adopted children, Samuel Kanu and Jonathan Kamara, Scott Miller, Stella Konadu; grandchildren, Kwafo Adarkwa, John Kargbo, Albert Mammah Jr. Richard, Lawrence E., Monica, Daniel, Aaron and Joshua Mammah; several other grandchildren including her great granddaughter, Olivia Adarkwa; many nieces and nephews including, Claudia A. Mammah and Latisha Johnson; and very close family friends in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Great Britain, Michigan and Florida. Ruth stressed in her wishes that her remains be buried in the United States so that her family will be able to visit her graveside.
