Obituary of John A. Butterly

BUTTERLY, John A., 86, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., passed away Friday, November 5, 2010. He was born in Chicago, IL and moved to Fla., in 1980. John was a United States Army Veteran and served in World War II Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant Squad leader Company I, 3rd Battalion 187th Airborne Infantry which is a part of the 11th Airborne Division. He was a firefighter with the City of Chicago in IL and retired in 1980. John was a member of St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Tampa. He was active in the following organizations, Past Commander of Chicago Fireman’s Post 667; Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2596; past Faithful Navigator of the Father J.J. O’Riordon Assembly in Ft. Myers, Fla.; Past Chairman of the Lee County Area Intergroup; President of the St. Francis Conference of Saint Vincent De Paul and life member of Knights of Columbus Staff Sergeant, Stephen Furst Assembly 3036 of Tampa, Fla. John was a friend of Bill W. for 51 years. He is preceded in death by his son, Mark; sister, Mary Rose Stiemetz; brother-in-law, Jack Cosgrove and nephew, Francis Cosgrove. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet; two sons, Richard and his wife, Kandy of Arlington Heights, IL and Brian and his wife, Kathryn of Wesley Chapel; sister, Helen Cosgrove of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren, Mark, Timm, Bridget, Richard K., Mary Janet, John; six great grandchildren, Matthew, Reid, Claire, Delaney, Nora Jane, Emily; sixteen nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Tampa. Vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Evanston, IL.
