I only knew Herb for a short time, but he loved his family so much. He was a kind, sweet and gentle man. Thanks for letting him be a part of our lives his last few months. To the family I am so sorry for your loss. He is with the lord. To Carol he loved you dearly. Always had a kind word to say about you and the girls. He knew that he was loved. God be with you all.

What a great brother he was. We all could learn how to better live our lives if we lived as he did. No conflict, not judging others or complaining about them, positive attitude, honest and with high integerity. I was very lucky to have him as my brother and I learned a lot by observing how he handled things. We grew up very close and we covered each others back. I just wish his last 7 years weren't such a struggle due to health issues. I hope to see him again some day!

I have lots of fond memories of my 'Uncle Herby' I recall as a young boy what a special treat it was to head down to sunny Tampa to see him and Carol. The funny thick grass, having Carol's spaghetti with carrots and loving it! Sipping lemonade while actually staring at a lemon tree… I remember thinking he must be the happiest person in the world because he never stops smiling! I remember around the age of 7 or maybe 8, Herb and Carol came to see us in Michigan. I was laughing so hard as I watched my dad revert back to being a boy as he and Herb joked and fooled around. Much the same way my older brother and I do to this day. What a gift it was being seven and thinking "Wow, I guess the fun doesn't stop when you get old” He's the only Uncle I knew and I'll miss him greatly.

I had a wonderful visit with my Uncle Herb and cousin Alyson last week, just a few days before he passed away. We remembered funny phrases that his mother/my grandmother used ("old age is not for sissies"); he told me the difference between dirigibles and blimps; he spoke lovingly about Carol's devoted care over the last years; we talked about his trips West in the RV and how CD (Carol's Dog) barked so loudly at the buffalo. He complimented the skill of his nurse and he liked the high back of his new chair. He joked about how his brother was losing his hair and that he had more hair left than my dad. We admired the cranes walking by his window and he asked how both my brothers ("the chef and the pilot"), my niece and nephews were doing. We remembered Grandpa Horn's 75th birthday party at the Chesapeake Bay and he asked what we were all doing for Dad's 75th birthday next year. As Alyson and I were leaving I gave him a hug and kiss and he said "I wish we had known each other better when we were both younger". It was such a good visit and I feel very lucky to have had the time with him and with Alyson. My love to Carol, Cheryl and Marianne and Uncle Herb's friends, Wendy

While I never met Herbert, being friends with his daughter Alyson taught me much about him. I heard so many stories about how sweet, kind and loving he was, and since he raised Alyson, I know he had to have been an incredibly special man. My heart breaks for your family for the loss, but I send prayers that you will all find comfort in your memories. Blessings, Holly

Although we never met, my wife Ingrid (of 50+ years) and I feel as though we knew you through your very loving and dedicated wife Carol Jean, or “CJ” as we both liked to call her. CJ and I served together in the USAF from 1959 through about 1961 and we became long-time friends. Through CJ, I have known you to have been a very honorable, faithful, and extremely caring person worthy everybody’s honor and respect. Thank you for your many years of honorable military service and caring for our long-time friend CJ.
