Obituary of Joan Ann DiMaio

DiMaio Joan Ann, 66, of New Tampa, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010. Joan Ann was born in Meridian, Mississippi on July 27, 1943 to Daniel and Joan (DiSalvatore) Foley. Her father Daniel was a dental technician in the US Army during WWII. After the war, when Joan Ann was age 4, the Foleys moved to their native Brooklyn, New York in the Park Slope section. At this time a brother, Daniel William (Billy) was born to the family. The Foleys resided on Bergen Street near Classon Ave. At school age Joan Ann attended St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Elementary School (also in Park Slope) at St. Johns Place and Classon Ave. The Foley family grew by two more children, Madeline and Michael. After graduating St. Theresa Joan Ann attended Prospect Heights High School. During this time, the Foley family moved to Maple St. in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. It was in Park Slope that Joan Ann met Richard DiMaio, son of Carmine and Antoinette. Both were young at the time and grew up as friends in the neighborhood. She and Richard were married on October 17, 1964 and settled in Borough Park, Brooklyn. After graduating High School, Joan Ann worked for Long Island University on Flatbush Ave. extension in downtown Brooklyn. She worked for the Clark Estates in Manhattan. Joan Ann and Richard bought a house in Staten Island and subsequently Joan Ann left her job to become a mother. On December 7, 1968 Richard, Jr. was born. When Richard, Jr. was school age Joan Ann returned to work for the New York City Board of Education, Committee on the Handicapped. In 1996 Richard, Jr. married Grace Seddio from Canarsie, Brooklyn and settled in Staten Island. In August of 1998, Joan Ann’s husband Richard retired from his job at Citibank, NY and she resigned from the Board of Ed as they both took up a new life in Tampa, Florida. She is survived by her husband, Richard; her son, Richard Jr. and his wife Grace; two grandchildren, Emily and Amanda. She is also survived by her two brothers, Billy and Michael and his life partner, Bernard Jordan; her sister, Madeline Graham and her husband, Frank; her husband’s brother, Carmine and his wife, Phyllis; his sister, Marie DiGiacomo and her husband, Charles; her Uncle Emanuel (Bill) DiSalvatore as well as nieces, Nephews, Cousins, great nieces and great nephews and two great, great nieces and a great, great nephew. She is preceded in death by her Mother and Father (Joan & Daniel) and her Mother In Law and Father In Law ( Antoinette & Carmine), Brother In Laws (Fred DiMaio & Joseph Verardi) and Sister In Laws ( Anne Verardi, Nettie DiMaio & Barbara Foley). A Service will take place at Loyless Funeral Home Tuesday May, 18th at 7:00 p.m. Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. ~ 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. ~ 8:00 p.m. Interment at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, New York
