I have a visual memory of a photograph somewhere in a family album. Uncle Don is wearing a suit and a hat and he's holding me in his arms so that my mom can take a picture. That's the image that pops into my mind when I think about Don. He went off to war when I was five and from that point on, he was the person that my mom worried about and the uncle I wrote letters to on cramped airmail stationery. I knew my uncle through my mom and then through Connie. Don was content to be the quiet one who let the women talk. Often when I called Don and Connie after they moved to Florida, Don would pick up the phone and say, "I'll get Connie." But after he was widowed, I had long conversations with him that were funny, revealing, interesting and long overdue. He always made me feel that our conversation was the highlight of his day. Dick would often call me and say, I had a long talk with Don today and you won't believe the stories he told me about WWII." We had a family treasure, just waiting to come forth..Despite losing Connie, he found that he could have a rich life and be happy--and he was a happy man.....................I do have memories of Don and his caps--and his Werther candies. When he and Connie visited me in San Francisco, Don had a pocket filled with Werthers that he handed out whenever we needed a boost in our sightseeing.....He was a darling man, and I miss him.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to you. Although we haven’t met, all of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. I recently lost my mother and know the pain of a broken heart. Our Heavenly Father feels our pain. Psalms 34:18 assures us that He is near to those broken at heart. He does, however, hold out a promise that in the very near future He will wipe out all tears of sorrow and pain from our eyes and death will be no more. (Revelation 21:3-5) He also promises to remember all those in the memorial tombs (graves) and restore them to life. (John 5:28,29) Until those words are fulfilled, may you find much peace and comfort in God and in His promises found in the Holy Scriptures.
