Obituary of Stewart A. Rouse

ROUSE, Stewart A., 90 of Land O’ Lakes, passed away August 28, 2009 at LifePath Hospice in Tampa, FL. He was born in Shoreham, VT on August 19, 1919, the son of William & Sofia Rouse. He attended schools in Shoreham & Middlebury, VT. After graduation, he married Ruth Ellis and enlisted in the Armed Forces. He served in the Phillipines and Japan during WWII. Stewart was a pioneer in the milk hauling industry during the transition of canned milk shipped by rail to bulk milk shipped by truck transport. His company, Rouse Motor Express became one of the largest trucking companies in the Northeast and during the 1960’s – 1980’s had a fleet of well over 150 trucks and multiple daily runs throughout all of New England. Stewart served four terms in the State Legislature representing Hartford, VT, as well as 10 years on the Board of Selectmen. He was a 50 year member of the Shriner’s. He served on the Board of Directors for the Conn. River Bank of Charlestown, NH. He was a well respected and successful man, both in business and personally. He accomplished this with the help of his 60 year partner and wife, Ruth. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth and their son, Ellis. He is survived by his friend and companion, Joan Hoskins of Land O’ Lakes; two sons: Richard and wife Lucy, Brandon, VT, Stewart, Jr. and wife Karen of Eliot, ME; one daughter, Marilyn and husband Dale of Land O’ Lakes; two brothers: Sanford and wife Theda of Brandon, VT, Charles and wife Betty of Castleton, VT.; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 31, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Loyless Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury, VT with military honors.
