Dr Phelps was very kind to this student many many years ago. Only a handful of professors were erudite and kind at the same time. If knowing him for a short time can make me feel this loss so intensely, I can imagine what his family feels.... though I do not know them personally. My prayers are with you all. God bless his soul.

Today, 2nd May 2008, I was googling for your address not having my new york address book with me, ...stumbling onto this news tore my heart out..... my very deepest love and hugs for Jess, Adam and Betty, Alta, Lee and Danny, how can I condole for a life you loved so ...for a soul I loved, as everybody who knew him must...judging from the sentiments in this guest book he was universally liked and loved... I can’t imagine Chris having an MI though, he used to be athletic, a cyclist of great endurance, of serene temperament, hardworking, loving, and loved by family, friends, most of the colleagues and all the students. His head was screwed on right with his heart in the right place, not an ounce of flummery about him. I should know, I have known Chris for 28 years in this lifetime. I spent 4 years in my research lab just across from Chris’s lab, we often ate lunches together, went on antiquing junkets together, organized and ran several Students research symposia together, developed interdisciplinary conversations and collegiality together, our conversations continued in New York and Vermont..over summers, winters, Christmases and new years... Chris had an open mind, was tender hearted, a believer in equality of races and sexes, we listened to Jazz and NPR, went to botanical gardens all over, and some zoos.... he and Betty complemented each other in their interests and family and children.....Chris was also a non-smoker.. people like that just do not drop dead of a heart attack... angry I am...yes. Sad yes...what changed at USF in last few years that hurt him so... stressed him out so much? Teaching and helping USF grow was Chris’s main daytime concern ....he had a good boss in Dr. Rhodin and then he himself was at the helm of his department’s endeavors....in the 90s and after turn of the millennium he seemed happy that the departmental progress and courses were shaping up, and that USF med school was on its way to becoming graceful and mature, it was no longer the wobbly snarly thorny teenager it was when I knew it in the early 80s... So what changed in last few years? Who.. what... at USF hurt him so deeply that a loving father, husband, son, brother, friend, teacher went from being a busy yet content helmsman to dropping dead .... I am asking... I do not know...last couple of years I had lost touch, I had my own troubles despair depression from having lost first my dad and then my mom both very close to me.. and now two dear aunts gone...... and hurried harried trips to India and loads of family responsibilities ... Jess and Adam, I can honestly say this to you: we never forget our parents, as time rolls on I find it does get a little less intense, and gets easier to recall the happy times, the strengths Mom and Dad imbibed in us, the funny stories dad told or goofy quirky things he did...jokes he told or couldn’t finish because he started laughing before finishing his own punch line....Chris could deadpan easily, but I could not and trying to show me how miserably I was failing to tell jokes, he himself would double over in the middle of re-telling of my joke and loose his punch line...goofy stuff, memories of which sustain those of us still here... Spiritually I believe in we .... well, .. I’ll tell you that when I see you. Betty, I was looking for your address because I had just started coming out of my doldrums, and wanted to share some of the new joys with Chris....and had just realized that I had not seen your Xmas letter for a couple of years... .But God had something else in mind.. Chris Phelps was both instructor and mentor to me during my PhD in Aging Studies process. I counted him one of my chief delights in that experience and was later delighted to be a fellow faculty member at the USF College of Medicine. He was a superb mentor, combining vast experience, wisdom, humor, and encouragement. I was honored to know him and send my profoundest condolences to Mrs. Phelps and all of their loved ones.

I feel such a hole in my heart - I cannot imagine the deep feeling of loss the family must feel. From days at Evergreen through PHS and beyond - I am grateful for wonderful memories of a dear friend. I learned of your tragic loss through Bill Harding's email to Lafayette College alums. I have never met Chris, but after reading the many messages in the guest book, I sure wish I had known him. I am so shocked and saddened to hear about this unexpected loss Dr. Phelps. As a post doctoral researcher in his department I found an ideal professor in him who cared so much about junior researchers and always wanted to help them. Last time I saw him in December, 2007 he was as cheerful and smiling as always. I'll never forget the help and encouragement I've received from him. I'll always miss him. I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to his family. When I first arrived at USF, Chris was one of the first faculty outside my home department that I came to know because of our common research interests. What I noted about Chris was how easily he would laugh, and how his demeanor was cool and composed. Later, Chris and I worked together in the Graduate Neuroscience course. He developed this course and taught it alone for several years before it was expanded into a “team taught”, interdisciplinary course. It was always a joy to work with him. He was a tireless teacher with high standards, and his door was always open to students. His broad knowledge of neuroscience was essential to keeping “Graduate Neuroscience” moving. He would faithfully spend extra time with the student who had difficulty with a particular topic, or the student who wasn’t experienced at giving presentations in the classroom. There are scores of students that were trained by Chris in that course who will not be recognized as his “trainees” since this is an interdisciplinary course. What I admired most, though, is the principled and professional manner with which he conducted himself in the workplace. He was a relentless advocate for faculty and faculty affairs; a service he would perform and ask for, or expect, nothing in return. This effort was often underappreciated by the faculty and the administration. He was one to work with more junior faculty “behind the scenes” and never seek personal credit when he assisted on someone else’s behalf. I have no doubt he will be deeply missed by the institution, but especially by the individuals that worked closely with him and knew him well. Count me as one of those.

I worked with Chris in Gainesville over 20 years ago. He used to drive up every Wednesday, and I really looked forward to it. We had stayed very loosely in touch and I had the pleasure of visiting him at his home just 2 or 3 weeks ago after not having been in touch for a number of years. As always Chris was so full of life and enthusiasm. It was a wonderful visit, and we promised to stay in touch. Georgia and I were shocked and saddened when we learned of his passing. He was a wonderful teacher and a very kind man. I will miss him. Our prayers are with the family.
