John Martin

Obituary of John Martin

John Martin of Tampa, Florida passed away on March 22, 2024 at the age of 97.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, he served in the United States Airforce during World War II.  John was a banking executive at Chemical Bank and retired after 39 years of service. He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Audrey Martin in 2018 and his son Michael Dennis Martin in 1972.

He is survived by his daughter Sandra Martin and husband Harry Kountouras; his son John Davis Martin and his wife Melissa; his son Douglas David Martin and his wife Flaurie, his grandson Zachary and his wife Stephanie and his great-grand daughter Leila; his granddaughter Jade and her fiancé Evan Kim.

Raised in the town of Catskill, NY John met Audrey at Western Union in New York City after the war.  They started their life together in Astoria, Queens and raised their family on Long Island.  John and Audrey ultimately settled in Palenville, NY after his retirement and embraced the snow bird life style spending winters in St. Augustine, Florida, while visiting family in Tampa.

John relocated from Palenville to Tampa in 2021, and spent the last two and half years with Doug and Flaurie, enjoying time with his family and especially watching his great granddaughter Leila grow up.  His favorite moments were when he was surrounded by family, with four generations around the table toasting the Martin family.  He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, role model, and mentor.

John will be cremated this week and we are planning a Celebration of Life for him in the near future. In lieu of flowers, family and friends can make a contribution to John’s favorite charity, Cycle for Survival, raising funds for rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, NY.
