Obituary of Joseph Yglesias

Joseph, a Tampa native, attended public schools in Tampa, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1948.   He was an honor graduate of Arizona State University where he was inducted into Alpha Mu Gamma, a foreign language honorary society, and was a member and served as President of Phi Kappa, a Catholic men’s fraternity.  A veteran of the Korean war, he was a classroom teacher at Chamberlain High School in the late fifties.  Joseph was employed by the U.S. Customs Service as an Export Control Officer in Tampa, a Customs Marine Officer at the port of Palm Beach and as a Regulations Officer in Washington, D.C.  He also served as Chief of the Regulations and Ruling Branch and of the Merchant Vessel Documentation Division at Coast guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.  In 1985, he served as a U.S. representative to the United Nations Conference on Conditions of Registry of Ships in Geneva, Switzerland.   

Mr. Yglesias leaves his wife of 70 years, Mary.  Two daughters, Cathy Donegan (Vince) of Warfordsburg, PA and Susan Freda (Pat) of Lutz; granddaughter Katie Yglesias-Beach (Matt) of Culpeper, Va; grandsons, Jonathan Yglesias of Richmond, VA, James Yglesias of Newport News, VA, Nathan Freda of Tampa, FL, Jeremy Freda of Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Aida Jurado of Clearwater, FL; and one brother, Kenneth Yglesias of California.  

Joseph was active at Our of the Lady Rosary Catholic Church as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, usher, and with his wife Mary as a Marriage Preparation team member.  He was a past member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society having served as Conference President and District Vice President.  

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Land O'Lakes at 10:30 am on Friday, June 30. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or your favorite charity.
