Obituary of Nancy Tiz Gilligan

In Memory of Nancy Tiz Gilligan

1944 – 2023

Nancy Tiz Gilligan of Grand Island, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 25th, 2023. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sibling and aunt to her family. She is survived by her former husband, Frank Gilligan; siblings Linda Van Dyke, Ralph Tiz (and Norine, nee Gledhill), Laura Tiz and Betsy Tiz; two sons, Scott Gilligan (and Jessica, nee Honan) and Tim Gilligan; 3 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was born in Chicago, grew up in Flossmoor, Illinois, graduated from the University of Miami and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She began her career as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines in the 1960s allowing her to travel the world as she was bilingual in Spanish. She also pursued her interest in computers with IBM for 20 years, traveling throughout the Caribbean placing computers in schools.

In addition, Nancy owned a franchise of Caring Transitions in Tampa supporting the evolving needs of aging loved ones hosting estate sales, downsizing, and helping families with relocation.

She was very active in the Sunlake Estates Community in Grand Island being part of the HOA, creating a very successful yearly entertainment event, playing pickle ball and being the announcer for the Sunlake Scrubjay’s softball team and was well loved by residents of that community.

Nancy lived life to the fullest! She loved to spend time with her neighbors, especially her best friends Dick and Jayne Frank.  She enjoyed living near the water and could be seen kayaking on the lake in her back yard, riding her golf cart with her dogs or doing karaoke at the community center. Being the life of the party and such an extrovert, she would often ask others to dance or just dance alone around the dance floor. She recently celebrated Gasparilla on her son’s boat catching beads.  And she adored her grandchildren attending her grandson Chase’s baseball games, granddaughter Chloe’s cheerleading competitions and enjoyed time spent with granddaughter Carly’s child, Annelyse.

Being an animal lover, she doted on her pets, and being raised around horses, often going to the racetrack to bet on the ponies. Her current dogs, Rio and Vivian, were of great comfort in their unconditional love in her final days.  She will be remembered for her great smile, laughter, wit, intelligence, kind heart, generosity, and love of life.  Thank you for your love and blessings in Nancy’s life!
