I'll miss Captain Tangeman. My heart goes out to Millie and the rest of the family; I only recently learned of his passing. Here are some things you may not know about him. As a brand new Ensign under his command at Coast Guard Group New Orleans in 1993, I learned a lot from him. I was his Admin Officer and Assistant Operations Officer, and he taught me much about going out into the community to help others. Together, we traveled many miles to visit the various new riverboat casinos and worked with local emergency agencies to ensure that we had a comprehensive disaster plan in case something happened. It was entirely his vision, and I was proud to help him complete development of the plans. I viewed him as a mentor. When my Administrative Department messed up someone's pay, I gave him my proposed solution. He told me straight out "That's not good enough!" He was right, and we went back to the drawing board and brought a better solution later. That was an important lesson for me, and I always remembered it. It came in handy, especially when I was a Deputy Group Commander later in my career. I remember good times including a number of crawfish boils where everyone was invited, even family! I also recall that he walked into the office one day and asked me to figure out who had the temerity to park in his assigned parking space that was clearly marked "CO." Eventually, we located a woman shopping in the Exchange who said "I thought CO was short for "Company," meaning she was company and this was guest parking. That afternoon, his parking space was remarked "Group Commander." Once, when he and I were returning from a unit inspection visit at Station Venice, he was taking a cat nap in the passenger seat. Apparently, I decided to take an unscheduled cat nap in the driver's seat. When I drifted off the road, I'm sure it was only the womp womp womp of the roadside bumps that woke me up and probably saved both our lives! He was kind enough not to make a big deal out of it. I was wide awake for the rest of the trip back to the base while I contemplated how bad my Officer Evaluation Report would look if it noted that I had killed my commanding officer! Everyone hated to see him leave when he got new orders. At his change of command, I was the platoon leader for the assembled crew of Group New Orleans. When he and his replacement walked around together to review the troops, my job was to conduct a sword salute and let him know everyone was present and accounted for. During our practice run for this, he and his relief had to suddenly jump back when I swung my sword in an arc that came close to cutting their buttons off their white uniforms! I, along with the rest of the crew at Group New Orleans, had the greatest respect for Captain Tangeman and we will always have fond memories of him and our time together.
