Betty Miller

Obituary of Betty H Miller

Betty Jean “MawMaw” Miller, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on May 13th, 2020.

Betty was born in Charleston, West Virginia to Thelma and Hoyt “Dutch” Harper. She was raised in Dunbar, WV where she attended Dunbar High School. In 1962, she moved herself and children to Tampa, Florida. Betty worked many years in the outdoor amusement industry before going to work at the Maison Rouge in Tampa. She returned to the amusement business as an owner/operator of food and games. Betty traveled across the United States with various carnival companies that include Royal American Shows, Reithoffer Shows, Link Shows, and Matt Armstrong Shows. She retired from the amusement business in 1997. During Betty’s many years of traveling and adventures, she never met a stranger, and many became lifelong friends. To know her was to truly adore her.

Betty’s greatest loves have always been her family, her Country, and the Lord. She always said her greatest achievements in life were her three children, but her pride and joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved having her family together celebrating Christmas and other holidays. She was the epitome of a loving grandmother. She was quick-witted and kept everyone around her in stitches; the more inappropriate the joke, the harder she laughed. She was a true spitfire. Betty’s hobbies included painting beautiful ceramics, making delicious zucchini bread, perusing yard sales, and cheering for the New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Mary “Witchie” Sargent (Kenny); son, James “Rick” Sergent (Alicia); daughters, Deborah Armstrong, Star Garcia (Butch); son-in-law, Bob Cottrill; stepsons, Paul Miller, Lyle Miller; grandchildren, Tim Cottrill (Colleen), Christina Broussard (Steve), Lindsey Smith (Ben), Annie Ammon (Ari), Cortney Greeson (Wrede), Sean Miller (Cyndi), Paul Miller, Steve Miller; great-grandchildren Maura Gilson, Baeleigh Gilson (Hunter), Kort Broussard (Gabbie), Aaron Cottrill, Brandon Cottrill, Amber Miller, Autumn Miller; 5 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; close friend, Bill Powell; and her beloved cat, “Lucy”. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Underwood; husband, Paul A. Miller; daughter, Penny S. Cottrill; and grandson, Lyle “Munch” Miller.
