I only recently heard about Joe’s passing, and am so sorry for your loss.
I had the privilege of working with Joe in USF IT For about 6 years before I moved to TX. During that time, I learnt so much from him, not just technical knowledge but also had the chance to observe his work ethic, kindness, humility, and professionalism.

My deepest condolences to Joe's family.
Having moved to Milwaukee, I came to know of Joe's passing away recently. I used to be a professor at the USF Muma College, teaching a course in distributed systems. To provide an enhanced learning experience to students, semester after semester, Joe would be kind enough to organize a tour of the telecom facilities at USF for my students. In addition, he would participate as an expert in judging student projects. Joe made valuable contributions in exposing my distributed students to practice.
I will always remember Joe with a deep sense of gratitude. He was one of the kindest persons that I ever met at USF.
May he rest in peace!

I had the honor to know Joe for more than 15 years. I work for a vendor and Joe (USF) was a customer. Although we worked together in a professional setting our relationship was a little bit more than that. We were both USF Engineering graduates, so we had both had a passion for the university.
We would have meetings where we were to discuss new products or issues, but they would always veer off to other topics. We would start talking about new technologies, totally unrelated to what I was there for, or our latest vacations and adventures. Our “one-hour” meetings would turn into marathons. He was so easy to talk to. He was one of the most intelligent and brilliant individuals I have ever met.
One memory is when one of my company’s products had a significant issue. It literally took us weeks to figure it out. During that time, Joe never made me feel personally uncomfortable. The professional that he was, he focused on the problem. Joe was instrumental in determining and correcting the issue. The only silver lining was that I got to spend a lot of time with him.
Joe was truly a good guy. It is rare to meet a person with such intellect and still be humble and kind. What a loss and I will miss him. Visiting the USF campus will never be the same.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. While I had only met him a couple of times on the Tampa campus, I had spoken to him on the phone or shared emails with him on countless occasions in the past six years. He was one of the consummate professionals in the Network IT Team on the Tampa campus. He will be sorely missed and I am so sorry for your loss, particularly at such an early age,
Sincerely,

I first met Joe at USF College of Engineering working as a computer lab student assistant.
We both ended up getting jobs in different department at USF. Joe was the smartest IT "geek" I have ever known. He was always willing to help, always smiling even under pressure,
and always had a down to earth attitude.
I will miss him.

I'm so sad that Joe is no longer with us.
I've known Joe since right after I moved to Tampa in the early 90's. He was one of the smartest and kindest people I've ever met. I've never met anyone with the knowledge and humility of Joe Rogers. He was simply unique.
Two memories that come to mind were when he was a student in a class I was teaching and I ended up learning a lot from him; the second is when he agreed to watch over Moffitt's network so I could go out of the country for my honeymoon.
I'm happy that I stayed in touch with Joe after I left Florida. I must have tried to recruit him a dozen times but he would always say that he was happy at USF.
I recently had the opportunity to work with Joe on a project. I'm happy that we got to install one last new network together.
Goodbye my friend. The world has lost an extraordinary person.

I had the privilege of knowing Joe for more than half of my life. Looking back at those decades, there were so very many things to remember and say. Here are some of them.
My job at USF was my first real job, and in countless ways defined me as the person I am today.
I grew up to be an adult in that job, and was shaped by my coworkers and managers. I learned networking, but I also learned so much more, and Joe was instrumental in both. To say that working with and for Joe at USF defined me as a person is not hyperbole.
From Joe I learned the value of being patient and nice. Of reaching out a hand to collaborate and guide.
From Joe I learned the value of listening to others, of giving everyone respect and a say. Of humility. Of keeping my mouth shut if I had nothing nice to say about someone.
In an indirect way Joe got me my job at Moffitt — just my association with him (being good enough to work for him) was a major factor in the hiring.
In a direct way he helped me get my job here in Switzerland; his letter of reference had a big influence in the hiring process, I’ve been told.
Joe taught us all so much. He also inspired, set goals, didn’t settle for good enough, drove himself to excellence in everything, and whether it is apparent or not, that has had a lasting effect on all of us.
Joe set an example, one that will influence my thinking of what’s possible and how I go about my work and life for the rest of my days.
When I encountered tragedies he was decent, compassionate, and human. Something like a day or two off and how they were given may seem like a little detail in the grand scheme of things; but it’s not. Those are important things and memories that I’ve carried with me ever since.
I have two favorite quotes. The source of the first is unknown: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
The second is from Edward Bok’s grandmother: “make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.”
Joe embodied both of those to me.
With love and sympathy, Toivo

Joe was the most consistent man i ever knew. I had the pleasure of knowing him for 20 years or so, as a student, a contractor, and a professional. He helped me succeed in so many ways i cannot begin to explain all of them. I watched this man skim through 4 pages of my "Running Linux" book in about 10 seconds, while waving his hand past the words like a magician, and proceed to help me solve a problem i was struggling with for days. I was so amazed i didn't even catch the solution, we first had to address what i just witnessed. He explained to me that he already knew the material he just needed to refresh a bit. "Stop it" I said, "thats not even fair". he just chuckled. I am still in awe when i think about that moment. never seen anything like that before, but as we all know, Joe was very special. I respected Joe the most for always treating people with respect no matter what you did or what your title was. He was truly a genuine person. I wish i could thank him again for all his help in my own development. i owe him a lot! We all always looked to him for his approval and confirmation of our ideas. He'll always be our "Doogie Howser" of IT. much love and respect, as well as my deepest condolences to his wife, parents, friends and family. the world has lost a good one!!

I met Joe in November; he attended Charles’ 60th surprise birthday party. He arrived early and I introduced myself “you must be Joe Rogers, I’ve heard a lot about you. My husband respects you greatly and counts it an honor to work with you.” We were finalizing the details of the party and Joe offered to help. He ended up holding the door open for the food delivery. I said I feel horrible asking the “smartest guy” who works at USF to hold open the back door. He smiled very humbly and said that is something I can do. Although I only spent a few hours with him, I could see that Joe was a very kind, gentle, and compassionate person.
I am sorry for your loss and I pray the Lord will comfort you and your family during this difficult time.

I had the great fortune to get to know Joe when he was a fresh-faced kid who had just joined USF at Academic Computing back in the 1990's. My finest memories of Joe revolved around his strong passion for his work, and his way with people. Few technical people have the personal touch that Joe did. You never felt at any time that your (probably ill informed) question was unimportant to him. He always made time for you and you always knew he truly cared even when you knew that he was harried by the millions of problems he was trying to address. I had the good fortune of working with him for several years and he was among the finest information technology staff I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He will be sorely missed by all of us.
